I’ve been watching some of Okafor’s games in New Orleans. What really jumps out is his motor. He never stops playing. He may not be getting sacks in bunches, but he’s constantly bringing down running backs for a loss, or catching them from behind, holding would be 10+ yard gains to 3 or 4 yard gains. Strong guy, once he get’s his hands on someone, they’re done, hence why he never misses tackles. He’s aware of the play, occupying space where it’s required, and batting down passes often enough that it looks like a skill of his thanks to his awareness, not just a fluke.

He’s not going to straight up take over games like Houston did in his prime, not even close. But next to Chris Jones, he might produce a lot more than he ever has before, as effort is certainly not an issue. My main take, he looks a lot more impactful live than his stat sheet would suggest, and if we wanted a guy who brings a high motor nastiness and determination to our front, at the very least we’re getting that guy.

That’s a positive first impression right there! Thanks

saints fans seemed to like him and by all accounts hes a solid player. once the details come out it will probably look like a 2 year 10 million or something.

Anyone think our defense will still be 30 something this season? I just can’t imagine it being that bad.

SPI Chief

I don’t know how, I have no rationalization, but I think we end up close to 20

Want to fix the run defense, this is a good way to do it.

MasterChief

Interesting seeing the 4-3 defense being built. Seems like he’s a solid building block.

22 sacks in 6 years? Houston got that in one. Hard pass.

Tyrone

Right. We can only sign players who have had huge statistical seasons. Lucky we don’t have to follow the salary cap rules.

Six fucking years.

Tyrone
Tyrone

Oh well, better forfeit the season now then.

Tyrone
Tyrone

Oh wait, maybe not.

The year Spanuolo’s defense won the SB with the Giants, no one had 22 sackscomment image

The other year the giants won the SB, JPP had 16.5, the same as what Chris Jones had this year, then no one else had even 10comment image

The year the Seahawks won the SB playing a 4-3 under no one had more than 8.5comment image

and the following year when the made the SB again, no one had more than 7! (Okafor has had 8 once in his career btw)comment image

Tyrone

*Jones had 15.5

Found an article for the NO saint’s 90 man roster cut down to 56. Throwing quick numbers for positions out here.

Position: kept-cut

DT- 4, 2
DE- 5, 2
LB- 6, 2
CB- 6, 3
S- 5, 1

26 players made the last cut, 10 were cut.

So far the Chiefs have 2 DE and 2 DT on the roster expected to start.

Only 5 more players needed to fill out the DL depth chart.

KPass will be in the rotation……He was really good at Senior Bowl as a 7/wide 9……..Spags has always rotated guys and reduced down bigger ends(Speaks/KPass) in sub packages

Likely draft another 260+ end in first 2 rounds(would love Omenihu from Texas, could play both ends and reduce down in nickel/dime) and then maybe find a smaller edge(Dumervilleish) to come in for sub packages…….Williams showed a little rush ability from interior in Arizona and had glimpses last season

DE—- Okafor, Speaks, KPass, Draft pick, Draft pick/FA

DT—– Jones, Nnandi, Williams, Hamilton/FA/Draft pick

WTF_Chiefs
WTF_Chiefs

Say Jones “only” gets 7.5+ sacks due to increased double teams, then the other DTs get 2.5+ , and DEs combine for only 11……that’s 21 sacks before you figure that Spags (+ addition of Daly from NE) gets quite a bit from LBs and Secondary blitzes,……. Team could fairly easily be 30+ sacks……that’s not near this year but if team sees 20 less snaps a game, it won’t need near as many

Jones could be an updated-for-21st-Century bookend DE, like Neil Smith, only more athletic. I wouldn’t be afraid to line HIM up wide, with Speaks or Kpass as backups and another stud INTERIOR DL to bring pressure up the middle. I think Jones would be a force of nature, outside, and you’d have to bend things out of shape to double/triple him, outside.

I reckon they won’t go that route, but I’d be OK with it, myself.

CJ_Spiller

If KC trades up for a top EDGE, which most are speculating they will (depends on if they sign Darby), I would assume Okafor and the rookie are starting and Speaks and Kpass are back-ups yet again. Interesting.

StramtoReid

Remember that year when Herm Edward was the coach and the defense only had around 10 sacks as a team. We still have work to do, if we don’t want to be that team. You can’t expect Jones to have 10 plus sacks, if we don’t have bookends that get pressure on the QB.

Listening to Len and Mitch was hard to do that year. Just about every defensive snap, that was a pass, this happened:

“He drops back…he has time…looking, looking…still no defenders around him…looking, looking…moves to the right…moves left…looking, looking…”

So this means Allen Bailey is not re-signing?

Tony Sommer

Probably not. Our starting DL looks like Okafor-Nnadi-Jones-Speaks.

backbone313
backbone313

top competition so far to start looks like: okafor-nnadi-Speaks

Jones is the starter. The other 3 are names on the roster so far.

How many players do 4-3 teams bring in for training camp with the 90 man roster? Trying to decide which team to research for this. Guess will start with the Saints.

Tony Sommer

Nnadi started 11 games last year, so I think he’s in.

Speaks started 4 games when Houston went down, so I think he’s also in.

I assume Okafor is in given his contract. This is a lot of money for somebody who you don’t expect to start.

backbone313

Depends on cap hits…

Fans Can’t complain Allen Bailey underperformed with his contract in the 3-4… when they just signed a guy from the 4-3 with the same numbers

With 1 breathe then the other

CJ_Spiller

Bailey was solid enough. Okafor is $2m cheaper and fits the scheme better.

backbone313

On 1 hand fans said:

Bailey is over paid and not a good 3-4 DE

On the other hand:

Okafor is a great signing for a 4-3 DE for the right price

hmills110
hmills110

I think Bailey played over his head just to be a JAG on the DL. I feel pretty good about Nnadi/X as one of the interior guys, along with Jones. Add an impact DE in the draft and that’s a pretty deadly front 4. I wonder what’s up with Hamilton. He’s like an avalanche when he just brings it. Interesting possibilities.

Brownmanchiefsfan

Like this move a lot definitely still need to hit up DE in the draft but I feel a lot better about the position then two unproven guys

Whew. Glad i read the article. When the alert said, “Chiefs sign Okafor” i thought, “wth. Emeka Okafor is like 36. Maybe Harris’ replacement??? “

Fire Veach!

J/k…I like this move. Auto-upgrade at DE for not much money. Still a draft need but takes off some pressure.

zulu trader
zulu trader

^^^ this. takes the pressure off the draft. Seems to me that Veach kinda likes to do that. This morning I was thinking that D-Line was a draft need

hmills110
hmills110

You say that, but by the time he was done in FA last year, his draft was pretty much predetermined DE + DT. That’s kind of the opposite of what you’re saying.

I dig it. Dude is a very solid player. No he isnt going to be a sack machine but he has that ability if needed and is stout against the run.

The money is market value imo, especially if the gurantee money is reasonable. It’s not splashy but I dig it

hmills110
hmills110

Similar numbers, but Bailey was the guy always getting single-blocked on passing downs. His numbers were inflated by the extra attention others around him were getting. I bet Okafor’s a lot quicker off the snap. I bet Bailey’s probably better in pursuit. Bailey was always a jacked-up LB who could run the field, well, but never particularly quick and a bit undersized (and not-quick) for an interior lineman. Just phenomenally strong for his weight, and just kept getting more jacked-up every season. Having a career at ALL in the NFL, at his position, and working his way up to starting role is a real testament to his dedication to the sport and in the gym.

Bailey’s a lunch-bucket guy I’d keep my eye on as a potential future D coach, either on the line up to coordinator. He’s got my respect as a real grinder, and players would respect that about him. Loved having him in KC although I didn’t think he forced the action, enough, or capitalized enough when others gave him the most favorable matchup, due to his relative lack of explosion.

His production looks comparable to Bailey for a similar yearly average to what Bailey got 4 years ago. Nice value signing.

Not super splashly, but a pretty good value IMO. He played RDE for the Saints I believe.

I wonder if he plays SDE for us. Would think they would like a bit more of a pass rusher in the LEO.

Does he need to ask the Field Judge/ Line Judge every play if he’s behind the ball?

The Google image search indicates he does have experience asking judges questions.
