AAF Week 5 Power Rankings

Other than having the greatest game in AAF history, none of the outcomes were too surprising.

1: Orlando Apollos (5-0) Last Week: 1

Orlando showed Birmingham who’s boss. At the halfway point the gap between the Apollos and everyone else continues to grow wider.

2: Birmingham Iron (3-2) Last Week: 2

The Iron have now lost two in a row, and look very mortal. It was hard to imagine a couple weeks ago, but they could be in danger of not making the playoffs.

3: San Diego Fleet (3-2) Last Week: 3

San Diego won the AAF’s first instant classic game, but for an analytics nerd like myself “instant classic” means “close game that they should have won easily”. But a win is a win, so they keep their third spot for now, but they need to play better in the future to hold off San Antonio.

4: San Antonio Commanders (3-2) Last Week: 4

The Commanders are arguably the second best team in the league. Even though they had that embarrassing loss, they have looked like a top team otherwise. They also have 3 of their last 4 at home, so they could have a late push.

5: Atlanta Legends (2-3) Last Week: 7

The winner of the battle of the former bottom feeders, Atlanta gets to steal Memphis’ place in the rankings. Ex-Chief Aaron Murray looks like an upgrade at QB and will hopefully get to keep the starting job.

6: Salt Lake Stallions (1-4) Last Week: 6

Close, but no cigar. Salt Lake has had a tough early schedule, and being only 2 games back of the playoffs it’s not out of the question for them to make a late run and sneak in. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

7: Memphis Express (1-4) Last Week: 5

Memphis looks like a much better team with Mettenberger, but are still struggling to win games. From this point on their mainly playing for the chance to ruin other teams’ seasons.

8: Arizona Hotshots (2-3) Last Week: 8

Don’t let the final score fool you, the game wasn’t that close. Arizona continues to show that they’re the worst team in the league.

No way are the Commanders at 4, they’ve beaten 2 and 3 already, and they gave the Apollos their hardest fought win. They have to be 2 or 3 with the Iron at 4. Birmingham has a great defense, but their offense is not that great.

I’d say it’s a toss up between them and Birmingham for 3.

Birmingham just doesn’t have the offense to keep up with the best teams.

No but their defense is pretty good so far.

Yeah Arizona about to lose again, and bigtime in Orlando. Great job on the breakdown last week, you nailed it. Atlanta is a team on the rise for sure.
