The I’ve been getting away with this for quite a while now, but nobody’s stopped me, what am I doing wrong? edition.

Another busy day for me, even if I didn’t get much exercise. So tonight I thought I’d share a philosophy of mine. I have long said that I’m a fan of dumb ideas, because all the good ones have been taken.

That should be clarified, though, because that doesn’t make me a fan of bad or stupid ideas. I’m talking about “dumb” ideas that get passed over without being tested. Over the years I have more and more learned to not dismiss a fleeting idea as “dumb”, and give it a try. I’m not talking about an impulse to jump off a building, though. I’m talking about things like “I wonder if this way would work better?”, done on a very small scale, things like a better way to set up the coffee pot.

In effect, I’m living my life in accordance with the old saw, ‘the difference between theory and practice is that in theory, they’re the same thing…’. Now, how about some music:

And now, onward to the Main Event, the things the Community here have to say.

With that, time’s yours.

It’ll be interesting to see if this reshapes the landscape. We might see more players holding out on signing a franchise tender in the future, especially at the lower paid positions. Bell more than double what his franchise tender would’ve been.

wustl_chiefs_fan

The problem is that he rejected a bigger contract from the Steelers last year, and he probably would have gotten more money this offseason if he had played (and therefore prevented Conner from casting doubt on how much of his production was actually him).

9 times out 10 you;re going to be losing money

Bell to Jets 4yr/52.5 mill

wustl_chiefs_fan

Damn, was hoping the Raiders would be the one to waste their money. Oh well, not too surprising. Terrible deal for the Jets.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. RBs are like punters. They don’t really add that much value, the difference between an elite one and an average one isn’t that great, and the other 10 guys on the field actually do a lot of the work for them

wustl_chiefs_fan

Exactly. Hunt had a lower Y/C than the team as a whole last year, and also lower than both Spencer Ware and Damien Williams. Meaning our running plays were better without him than with him.

Tyrone
Tyrone

He did hurdle some guys though. That was fun.

wustl_chiefs_fan

I think that tricked us into thinking he was better than he really was. He was so good at getting those extra yards in ridiculous ways, he certainly seemed to pass the eye test.

It was no trick. Hunt’s a baller

That face when you outspend the raiders on a high paid RB

From Bell’s perspective it’s basically 5yr/52.5

Still 4 years of actual work. He just took a gap year. At least sticky icky Ricky found himself on his.

Tyrone

I assume he still “worked out” the whole year, which is kind of work

Meh, the work is the hits and the injury risk.

Released Houston to add Mathieu. Traded Dee to add Ramsey?? I am not a fan of losing those two talents so I hope we’re blown away by another deal.

I am, however, very happy to have gotten TM for sure.

wustl_chiefs_fan

I watched Mathieu yesterday and was very impressed. I think he’ll help our defense a lot.

I always think of Walter Matthau when I see Mathieu written. Walter wouldn’t help our defense much even if he was still alive, but he would be funny.

He probably could tackle better and give better effort than Parker did.

He would instantly go to number 1 on the trash talking depth chart

I’m just going to let it play out before I render judgement. They obviously have a plan to improve the defense and I’m really curious to see what they are going to do. I keep reminding myself that even with Ford and Houston we had a shitty defense last year and they were no shows in the title game.

Thing that gives me confidence is the evidence that veach’s first year of draft picks and free agents shows he was planning this defensive transition for a year to get the right staff and roster in place.

I get that everyone is in win now mode with Mahomes on his rookie deal. But I agree with veach’s long view more. I think future draft picks are undervalued in the league and in 14 months we’re gonna be quite happy to have the niners’ likely high second round pick to secure 4 years of cheap talent after we’ve paid our GOAT to be QB.

I wanted to see what JH50 could do in this defense. Between his ability to rush, and his ability to cover I thought he had the flexibility that could come in handy.

I felt we all knew Ford wasn’t going to stick so I’m not worked up about that.

Love the Badger signing.

It’s going to be interesting to see if Jones can continue to be a monster and I’m looking for him to step up and be a leader in the locker room. After DJ and Hali left that left Houston and Berry as the “vets” Houston is gone, and I still expect Berry to be gone. We need leaders on defense. Jones really needs to be one.

Big year for Kpass, and will be interesting to see if Speaks finds a natural position or if he was just a wasted pick.

I keep telling myself it can’t be worse than last year, and hoping that an attitude change (coaching) will be just the ticket to get this defense to slightly above average which would have been a SB last year.

I wonder if anyone has some stats on veteran 3-4 OLB moving to 4-3 DE/OLB

I’m not saying what I really think about the situation, but:

Convince me that the Ford “trade” is a good thing.

A second round pick next year and freeing up some gambling $??

ElPasoJason
ElPasoJason

I’m guessing they just weren’t gonna be a fit per Spags so they decided to clear the cap space.

wustl_chiefs_fan

Look at his contract, for a supposedly top pass rusher it’s not very much. It not only clears up cap space, but that 2nd round pick could turn into a good and cheap player during a time where we have a lot of expensive contracts.

venturachief
venturachief

It’s also interesting, and perhaps telling, that there wasn’t that much interest throughout the league.

Falco16
Falco16

I wonder how much it was the Chiefs were under leveraged because all buyers knew KC was wanting out from under 55.

I think the interest wasn’t earth shattering, but a couple of bidders were out there.

wustl_chiefs_fan

That doesn’t really impact things. As long as you have more than 2 teams interested they will bid against each other.

It was just the 49ers and the Packers and the packers decided to go the FA route.

WTF_Chiefs

Team led league in sacks but still had worst defense in the league……There will still be an abundance of opportunities for pressure with teams trying to keep pace with Mahomes led offense……and likely with 4-3, teams won’t be able to run ball down defenses throat to wear them down…….Secondary will be improved with personnel and scheme, allowing more time for pass rushers to get home…….

Speaks will be an effective SDE rusher in the 4-3, with more leverage for him out of 3 point stance……go back and look at Senior Bowl highlights for KPass when playing “cocked” at 4-3…..bring in a couple more edge rushers and bring the waves(don’t forget we took NE dline coach)
and have 4-5 guys getting 5+ sacks along with multiple sacks from a couple LBs and Safetys

Like I said in earlier post, if team gets 20 less sacks on season but is on field 20 less snaps a game, sack % actually goes up and defense Is getting off field more
