How’s everybody’s frosty weekend going? I’m about to head off for another round of youth basketball. After that? Shoot some video for AG and then the youngest son’s birthday party. Fantastic!

Speaking of fantastic, I’m pretty happy about the Brendan Daly hire. In fact, I’ve probably been more impressed with the assistant coaches Spags has hired than with the actual Spags hiring itself. There will be no coaching excuses on defense next year, the defensive staff is as qualified as they come. Now its a matter of adding some quality players in the draft and free agency, as well as figure out how the current players fit the new scheme.

For a little entertainment, I offer you AG’s Favorite Bronco Son, Brandon Perna.

3rd shift thread’s up. Try to not act the way a crowd waiting to see The Who in your rush to get over there.

Yay my new team that I’d never heard of before today! (I do reserve the right to change my mind after watching other teams.)

That’s what I was wanting to see.

The new CBA needs to equalize salaries according to tiers that have massive performance incentives.

I’m having fun with this AAF. I like having football until the Spring.

chief_curmudgeon

I don’t get why the XFL is also starting a league. Maybe they can have a merger or a championship game between the 2 leagues.

Tarkus

Because Vince McMahon’s ego.

KC Dude (A.K.A Zif)

I think the XFL will be late to the party by the time they get going.

chief_curmudgeon
chief_curmudgeon

Or the AAF will be competent enough to get people interested in semi-pro football that they instantly take to XFL as well.

SuperMegaChief

I’m all for competition. The AAF, XFL, LFL….bring them all on.

Don’t want to stretch talent and coaching too thin.

Im thinking that might be a legit possibility in 5 years or so if all leagues are successful, that they eventually merge into 1 league and they become an official NFL Minor League, giving options for players who believe themselves good enough to get payed to play rather than play for free NCAA and also a spot for practice squad level players to further show theyre worthy

KC Dude (A.K.A Zif)

Interesting that all of them get paid the same. But also get various bonuses for community service.

chief_curmudgeon
chief_curmudgeon

Will Grier will be pretty good in this league in a couple of years. 😉

KC Dude (A.K.A Zif)

What is this illegal formation on defense? I have heard it called a few times today.

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

Too many men blitzing.

WaywerdSon
WaywerdSon

the formation thing is for having a rusher either more then 2 yards outside the tackle or more than 5 yds off the line. you have to bring the blitzer to within 5 yds of the line so it makes safety and corner blitzes much easier to pick up. They also have to declare which defenders are eligible to rush and even if one doesnt rush they cant use anyone else, even if it doesnt exceed 5 rushers

Tyrone
Tyrone

I don’t like that at all. Surprise blitzes are fun

chief_curmudgeon
chief_curmudgeon

Not when the OL is bad and has no chemistry and the QBs aren’t good pre-snap. Running the ball like crazy would be the alternative though.

Tyrone
Tyrone

Fair point.

chief_curmudgeon
chief_curmudgeon

Injuries to QBs probably play a pretty big factor too.

BleedingRedAndGold

After mulling this over for a bit, seems to me that the rule also requires pass-rushers to be good and get better, although it remains to be seen if heavy-protection blocking schemes will become a reliable part of an offense’s passing game. Still, it appears to be beneficial for developing defensive players, too – at least on paper.

Panzer85
Panzer85

Offense, Defense, Special Teams: You’ve got to play to get better. It’s the one thing I worry about when we draft someone saying how they’re going to ball their first year in and then they turn out to be a bust because of how big the College to NFL stretch can be. I think it’s gonna be great for everybody. They have to try to keep up with Mahomes somehow…

Brylowman
Brylowman

They want some offense. As good as the defenses are playing, can you imagine how one sided it would be with blitzes?

chief_curmudgeon
chief_curmudgeon

Can’t send more than 5 guys and they have to be lined up on the LOS before the snap.

Berserker

So basically, they codified the way that most all NFL defenses played before the ’80s.

Spurrier unleashing unholy Hell on ATL and I love it.

Tyrone
Tyrone

I think the ref uniforms would be better without the vertical stripes at the bottom. Just solid black

Brylowman
Brylowman

They need some stripes to recognizable, but they picked the wrong ratio between the two. But I still like the attempt.

Brylowman
Brylowman

The more I look at them, the more they look like a kids Starter shirt over a refs shirt.

Tyrone
Tyrone

They’re clearly going to be officials even without the stripes. That brings up a good point though, The Birmingham team wears all black head to toe. even with the minimal stripes, they’re going to look very similar to the Iron players when things are moving fast. Especially the unripe and back judge.

Spurrier gets this league. No boring stuff!

KC Dude (A.K.A Zif)

What do you think the chances are that we will see some of these guys playing on sundays on an NFL team this coming season?

Tony Sommer

It’s very likely a handful of them will get a shot in the NFL. Most will probably be in NFL training camps.

chief_curmudgeon
chief_curmudgeon

100% I have a hard time thinking just 1 guy isn’t worth having at the bottom of an NFL roster.

Panzer85

I wouldn’t doubt some to get through, but I’m guessing it’s more likely the glorified team positions like WR, CB, and QB aren’t going to show much for an NFL team to start. That being said, if this is truly supposed to be the NFL’s farm league, a lot of development can happen, especially for guys that were already once in the NFL, in a short season like this. After what I’ve seen, I’m not sure this is really a 7-8/10 speed compared to a 10/10 of the NFL. Just in this one game I’ve seen better and harder tackling than last season (and, no, I’m not just talking about the Chiefs).

BleedingRedAndGold

I mentioned one other potential benefit to defenses down below, but you touch on another one with tackling. With the current system, players most likely don’t get enough work regarding tackling. But if UDFA types can get good at tackling and find success in the NFL after a stint in the AAF, that’ll put bigger-rep guys on notice to get on top of their own tackling skills.

Probably wouldn’t even take much, just a steady trickle of UDFAs beating out drafted guys for roster spots.

slackator

playing, very slim but I think youll see a handful of them be on rosters

chief_curmudgeon

So, what team have we adopted? Memphis, Salt Lake, San Antonio?

Brylowman

There’s only one red team so…

Tony Sommer

I think San Antonio.

I’m rooting for them as a thank you for Mahomes. (I can’t root for the Cowboys or Texans.)

This is the correct answer.

Going with AZ just because. Probably the wrong choice, but at this point it really doesn’t matter.

I have adopted Orlando of course.

Well, they have never scored less than 37 the entire time they’ve been in the Alliance. It’s incredible, really. XD

Let’s see them score 37 on this defense, though. 😉
