Friday Night Open Thread

Its Friday night folks, we made it. Time to crack those cigars and light them beers. Or something to that extent. Friday means its time to lay out your victory of the week. My VOTW was discussing Kansas City BBQ with Jeff Allen on Twitter, good times.

[Editor’s note: a type-o caught at the last moment might have left you wondering why Jeff Allen and I were discussing large beautiful women on the internet]

If the 3rd shift thread isn’t up by now, I’ll go torture the software into submission, so please proceed that way in an ord – oh, never mind orderly, I know you folks too well to expect that. Just do it.

So I was doing an in-depth look at our roster construction compared to the Pats. I probably should have been looking at GB or something since TB usually takes less than what Mahomes will get.
Long story short: things are going to be much different around here. We are going to see some top-end talent either walk or get traded off at the end of a contract. Can’t just re-sign our good players anymore. Drafting while paying top dollar for a QB is of utmost importance.

Berserker
Berserker

Guess we’d better get good at the draft, then.

That’s what Veech is supposed to be good at. Cap management and roster construction are pretty important too. Hope he is the real deal.

RDD India

We are going to have to follow patriots model. No two ways about it. On offence have stud O line, others come and go expect may be 1-2 positions. On D, have core of 3-4 players and rest to be changed based on draft. Most will be traded/ released after their rookie contract. I like it, will keep most roster young. That also mean, we get best Fas and best assistant coaches ( has added Reid as a coach)

Horrible comparison. Statistically speaking thats still nonsense. Lol

I think it’s understandable, because I wouldn’t want him to go BASE jumping or free climbing during the off-season, but no basketball? Seems a bit ticky-tack, especially since a big part of what makes him so good was his pursuit of multiple sports while growing up, but I wasn’t consulted on it.

Sounds good, presuming he can transition his game upwards, if/when he enters the League. Not saying that he can’t, but it is a big step up, and not all make it.

If he can bring that level of play when faced with NFL-level competition, he’d be very good to have, indeed.

Exactly my thought

BleedingRedAndGold

Sure, I get that, but just because it applies to almost all college prospects doesn’t make it untrue, or something that should never be mentioned, even as a cautionary note. Something that applies to all of them means it’s something you should always keep in the back of your mind about them.

And that was the extent of my intent, to get a cautionary note out in the discussion. Ain’t like I talked anyone down, and certainly said nothing bad about RamX21, so the tone of the responses I’m getting doesn’t make any sense to me.

BleedingRedAndGold

Dunno how many will believe this, but it’s only when I am in the mix that I have difficulties in analyzing social situations/dynamics, probably because I had a lot of false beliefs about myself planted in me in childhood.

I wasn’t physically abused, and most would likely say that I wasn’t emotionally or psychologically abused, but none of that can dismiss the damage that was done.

But when I’m out of the situation, I’m pretty damn good at it. Remember how I started making a nuisance of myself at AP, round about last July? I saw the ban-fest coming back then, although in July, all I could see was some sort of corporate lockdown of the site, to get us unruly fans to “behave”, meaning to get behind Sweeny’s “vision” and help drive it for him.

Here’s the thing, though. When someone starts pushing me, I don’t tend to meekly capitulate. ‘Nuff said.

Mattl
Mattl

It’s amazing how childhood experiences or whatever can stay with us and affect how we interpret things.

When it comes to chatting with people online though, it can be so difficult to interpret intent or tone or any subtlety at all. What one person might intend as a “smart aleck” joke can be easily interpreted by someone else to be a real criticism. Fortunately, since we have a great group here, I automatically assume the best of everyone. It’s easier for me that way. πŸ™‚

BleedingRedAndGold

Well, goes beyond the normal childhood stuff with me, in a couple different ways, but that’s a long, long, complex story.

Me, I don’t assume the best of anyone here, I assume that they’re all normal people. So there’s bickering and such, but my goal is to make sure I bail before I start getting too heated up. My grudge ration is 1, and it’s been taken for close to 30 years now. It’s unlikely I’ll ever see him again, but if I do, and exact my retribution (once the legal issues settle down), I’ll consider my options.

And if you think about that paragraph, you’ll understand why I try to avoid long-term animosity, especially here.

Mattl
Mattl

I’m not knowledgeable enough about football to do my own scouting, so I rely on the player profiles that “draft guys” write. When I’m looking at defensive possibilities for KC, at the top of my list is “Can he TACKLE?” And if so, “Can he HIT?”

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

Oh he can hit and tackle.

Berserker
Berserker

You don’t have to be knowledgeable about schemes and footwork and all that. Just look for college players who make good plays, and you’ll get about as many hits as the “draft guys” do.

The thing is, “draft guys” who are knowledgeable about the technical aspects of football tend to get lost in those technicalities. And then they forget to just watch for winning plays. Like all the smart guys who stared at Mahomes’ feet because that made them feel smart. So, by all means listen to those guys, but don’t put their opinion ahead of your own.

ForeverRanger91

VOTW Getting banned from Arrowhead Pride.

I had to take drastic measures. I hate what has come of the place. Yet, I found I still couldn’t stay away. I would visit the site just to find myself becoming increasingly irritated. With the lack of quality content. The complete void of intelligent football conversation in the comments. AP was the best sports blog on the internet IMHO. I had been there for years! I didn’t want to say goodbye. But I had to. But I couldn’t do it if I had to rely on my own will power. I tried that. I couldn’t quit AP. So…

I set upon my mission. I started leaving obnoxious but honest comments. Making “shit post” Fan Shots, fucking with Sweeney and the rest of that team.

In less than a few hours I was banned from AP! I did it! I was free! And now maybe, I can start anew with a few like minded Arrowhead guys πŸ˜‰

But wait there is more. I got more than I asked for. A little more than I had expected.

Yeah, a big reason this all started was because those types of comments were deleted. And what’s particularly insidious about the way SBNation deletes comments is that it’s as if they never existed, so a lot of people think they’re just removing garbage.

Leaf

I’ve peeked a few times on the real slow days. But i never made it past the front page because nothing looked new or interesting and the comment sections were practically non existent.

workingmansdead

I really haven’t clicked over there in weeks. That’s after having that site open as my main tab – so 100% of the time any time I was on a computer – for years.

Leaf
Leaf

Yeah I use to practically live there. I think I can count on one hand the times I’ve been there since they banned me. But the sadist in me gets tempted from time to time to see how bad it’s gotten.

BleedingRedAndGold

Couldn’t resist a glance over there, and noted that the vast majority of their front-page content was put out by Dixon, Trost, or Sweeny. I noticed an uptick in their use of articles from other SB blogs ot SB Nation itself as filler, I don’t know that’s fully died off, though.

Still, given what I saw when I looked, there seemed to be a decided lack of original content, with Trost and Sweeny doing little more than pointing out stories elsewhere, sometimes with a short re-hash of whatever. I know that Dixon does some original writing via memory, but his byline’s usually re-hashes, too, best as I remember.

Just based on that glance, I’d say that our off-season prospects are looking better than theirs.

Leaf
Leaf

We always suspected this would be the worse time for them. The spags hire gave them something to talk about, but now that things are solidifying, it’s going to slow way down.

BleedingRedAndGold

Yeah, it’s no surprise that it happened, what startled me was how quickly and abruptly it appeared to have came on. Thus my comment elsethread about Sweet Peeny’s inability to think in the long term.

And yeah, since some hiatuses aside, I haunted AP on a daily basis, I had a feel for the number of “me equivalents” (daily, active members), and I suspected that a drop-off would come, if/when he silenced the regulars to better control the product – forgetting that the vocal, die-hard fans had been a major source of content.

Now it’s the off-season, and he won’t have the comments section providing a reason for people to show up. My guess is that while they’ll continue to put up good primary statistics (unique hits, f’rex), people aren’t going to have much reason to stick around on the site, so it’s the secondary stuff where the damage will be detectable, as in repeat customers during the day.

On top of that, Sweeny’s lost his source for home-grown authors. Guess it never occurred to him that with plenty of people having things to say, at least some of them’d get good at it. What happens when his current staff get offers and move on, or is he hoping/planning to have moved on himself before that happens?

BleedingRedAndGold

Sounds like a fairly typical Sweet Peeny/Aly the Rams fan overreaction.

Fire_FG_the_moron
Fire_FG_the_moron

PeteS weeney has still got his man junk in Aly’s purse. When is he going to realize she’s using him and that site to advance herself, and when its out-lived its need, she’ll cut him and the site and he wont even be a foot note in her wikipedia page.

BleedingRedAndGold

Considering that’s the same reason he took the AP job, he’s likely convinced himself that it’s a mutual advancement effort. Which is likely true enough, but leaves out a lot of important stuff. Best as I can tell, Peeny’s idea of thinking about the long term is making plans to go see a movie on Saturday starting on the Monday before it.

Fire_FG_the_moron
Fire_FG_the_moron

I think Petes Weeney thinks shes there for him, then career advancement, when in reality she’s using it for career advancing and nothing else. He’s so naive that I ALMOST feel bad for him. ALMOST, but he deserves being shit on for the way they’ve treated people at AP. Hope it was worth it.

Classic rock Friday:

A very underrated song from the first album after Roger Waters left the band (and a notable step up from the awful “Final Cut” album, which would be Waters’s last with the group). And with the underrated song comes an underrated guitar solo toward the end.

Mattl
Mattl

Love this one. Definitely underrated. One of the best songs live too.

Nasrani
Nasrani

One day I woke up with this guitar solo in my head, but I had no idea where it was from (as I had heard this song substantially fewer times than anything of theirs out of the 1970s), and it took me forever to nail down where I’d heard it… I dug out the iPod and found this on there. Great, great song.

“Marooned” is good too.

Mattl
Mattl

Yep, good album. I guess it was actually the last one of new music that Floyd did.

Nasrani
Nasrani

They had one come out in 2016 (?) that was “new” in the sense that none of the tracks had previously seen the light of day. Apparently it was assembled from old instrumentals Richard Wright had composed before he passed into the quiet grace of eternity.

Mattl
Mattl

I can’t count releases like that though – no matter who it is, it always ends up sounding raw, incomplete and (usually) pretty horrible.

Nasrani
Nasrani

I see your point.

Admittedly for me it isn’t bad. I mostly use it in the background while I’m doing homework. It isn’t “The Wall” or “Wish You Were Here” but it isn’t bad.

Mattl
Mattl

It’s pretty sad that Waters had to be such a jerk. Think about how many good albums he and Gilmour could have made during the 80s and 90s. Instead, we get The Final Cut, plus the two Waters-less Floyd releases. Waters solo stuff is mostly dreadful and not at all Floyd-like.

Nasrani
Nasrani

Yeah I’ve heard. I guess fame went to his head, especially since before “Wish You Were Here” Waters was really humble and insecure about his singing and everything. The success of “The Wall” made him into the sanctimonious perfectionist he was, and the acrimony from that tour and from the dismal “Final Cut” were ultimately what pushed him away.

“Momentary Lapse” and “Division Bell,” despite being without Waters, are far far better than “The Final Cut” was.

Mattl
Mattl

I definitely agree about the Waters-less Floyd was better than Final Cut, but those albums also missed the emotion that Waters brought to things.

I read a book a decade or so ago that told the story of the band. Interesting stuff. I forget who it was that said it about the pairing of Waters and Gilmour (who famously didn’t get along), but it was something like, “Waters made you think, and Gilmour made you enjoy it.” That pretty much sums it up, I think. It’s what made Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall so amazing.

Nasrani
Nasrani

All three of those albums have gotten me through many difficult times in my life.

Mattl
Mattl

I believe it. I’m not even into music at all, but during the 90s I listened to a lot of Floyd while in the car. Still remember it all.

Nasrani
Nasrani

I’m kinda the opposite of you. I love music, almost to the point of being unhealthy. I’ve almost always got to have something playing. I listen to it walking to and from my classes, while I’m doing homework, while I’m driving, while I’m playing video games… I was privileged at my former job: they would let us use headphones as long as we were (somewhat) productive and took them off when superiors were talking to us.

Someone had the bright idea of taking in an iPod speaker dock, and I would always have “Classic Rock Friday” every day to boost morale (it worked) and because it’s impossible to listen to classic rock and not be in a good mood.

I find music (usually) helps me focus on stuff, like homework or my job. My tastes are somewhat eclectic – I’ll spare people audio samples of what I listen to – but I listen to pretty much anything out of the 1960s and 70s that isn’t disco, Bruce Springsteen, or U2; I also listen to a lot of Christian rock and metal. I’ve seen many Christian bands in concert, and those are fun concerts to go to. The bands are also great to hang out with.

In addition I listen to lots of film scores: “Star Wars,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Harry Potter,” etc. They help with reading, which is something I’m trying to do more.

Mattl
Mattl

Have you listened to Greta Van Fleet? Someone told me they sounded a bit like Zeppelin. I was pleasantly surprised.

Nasrani
Nasrani

I’ve heard a couple songs of theirs, and yes they do sound like Zeppelin. The resemblance is uncanny. I thought Zep had some new material out the first time I heard Greta van Fleet.

Leaf
Leaf

That’s what I don’t like about them. They would make an awesome tribute band because he sounds so much like Plant. But as their own band they are uninspiring and unoriginal. A copycat band.

Mattl
Mattl

As someone who admits he knows nothing about music, they DO sound original to me. They have a Zeppelin-esque sound, for sure, but I don’t get the sense that they’re copying them or anything. Just my opinion.

Leaf
Leaf

It is sad that neither could get past their differences. In reality is, while they are both musical geniuses, they really needed each other.

Nasrani
Nasrani

Same with Boston. I’ve heard that Tom Scholz (guitar player) was really anal and a diehard perfectionist. I’m not entirely sure, but he might have been one of the major catalysts of vocalist Brad Delp’s suicide in 2007.

Mattl
Mattl

Delp would have my vote for greatest rock voice of all time.

Leaf
Leaf

Mattl
Mattl

Totally different from each other, so hard to compare, I guess.

KC Dude (A.K.A Zif)

I grew up on this.

BleedingRedAndGold

Poked around for some comparables and Freddy had more going for him than range, according to voice analysis. Also picked up this tidbit: From analysis of six of his interviews, experts estimate that his natural range was most likely baritone, not tenor. That one surprised me, anyway.

Mattl
Mattl

Best voice or not, Queen would still have my personal vote for greatest band of all time, with Pink Floyd a close 2nd.

BleedingRedAndGold

Nothing bad to say about your choices, but for me, #1’s still The Beatles. Queen and Floyd are in my top 5, at minimum, but personal tastes are involved, not technical standards, so there’s going to be variability.

Mattl

Yep, lots of people seem to have The Beatles #1. I respect it, but they were never my thing.

Every time I’m on a plane, I listen to this one. Sounds cheesy, I know, but something about being up there in the sky…

I guess I’ve always been fascinated by aviation. I’m not smart enough to understand the physics or engineering behind it, other than a very basic understanding of lift and Bernoulli’s principle and all that, but among the greatest video games I have ever played are aerial combat simulators.

I also nerd out when I’m on planes, whether they’re the little Embraer regional jets or a 757.

BleedingRedAndGold

I can understand that, been geeking out on aircraft for a long time. Favorite quip? Of course I like planes, and how can I not? After all, the only things holding it up are speed and mathematics. Plenty of good memories associated with that, like the time I took her to her first air show. Her reaction at seeing a C5B from up close, naked eye stuff, was priceless. Her reaction to seeing her first A10 Thunderbolt II is, shall we say, of a slightly more ribald nature. πŸ˜‰

Nasrani
Nasrani

I remember when I was a kid, various companies used to send out samples of sets of cards you could order, and it seemed like we always received the zoo animals set and the planes one. These cards – perhaps that isn’t the right term – had a picture of the plane on the front, the maker (Northrop Grumman, Aerospatiale, etc.) across the top, and the name of the plane (Tomcat, Globemaster II).

The card could then be opened, and a limited cross-section would be shown of the engines, intake, etc., and for fighter jets, weapons would be shown on the hard points, as well as typical armaments. On the inside of the card would be photos of the plane being used, facts, notable incidents, records, and things like that. I would try (unsuccessfully) to draw the planes – everything from a B-25 Mitchell to a Concorde to an F/A-18 Hornet – and learn about the various missiles and such.

I put the planes ones in three-ring binders and would read them quite frequently. I think that’s what boosted my interest in fighter jets especially, but aviation in general. Unfortunately I’m as blind as a bat so being a pilot never panned out (I wanted to fly an F-16 when I was a kid, but I guess I can do the next best thing: the default plane, the one used in the first mission of the campaign, on Ace Combat 6 is an F-16).

I don’t remember what the product was that they were selling or the point of randomly mailing these out was, and most of the time junk mail is annoying, but I always thought these things were really cool.

BleedingRedAndGold

For me, one aspect was building model planes, and the pinnacle of doing that was a B-17G with motorized propellers. Not so much because the plane itself was a serious challenge, it was building each DC motor, including winding the coils. That was finicky as hell.

BleedingRedAndGold

Incidentally, if you haven’t run across it yet, The Great International Paper Airplane Book is a lot of fun, though it’s probably pretty dated by now. Still, they all fly, even the tiny paper-match rocket that made it in. I don’t think I ever got one to go more than 8″, but it was fun trying.

Great song, but I, possibly only I, really enjoyed “The Final Cut”. Also enjoyed Pros & Cons, which was really similar, but after that it got painful.

Mattl

I enjoyed Final Cut, but felt like it was leftovers from The Wall. Maybe The Wall Part 2. Pros and Cons had its moments….but parts of it really dragged. Interesting concept though. Radio Kaos was average at best.
